Q: Shallot seed heads
We planted shallots last fall. Now seed heads have developed. Should we do anything about that? When is the proper time to harvest shallots?

It is best in this stage to take the seed heads off the stalk in order to focus the energy of the plant on developing large plump shallots. You will want to harvest your shallots when the plants stalk start to yellow and turn brown and wither. Take a look here for our planting guide for shallots.
Hope this helps!!

I want to save my shallot seeds, when do I take them off the plants?

We also have shallots making seed here in No. Calif. (we bought the bulbs from Peaceful Valley). When I google for shallot propagation info on the web, practically everyone says that shallots simply don’t go to seed. This really makes me wonder…is this some climate change shift or what? Or does it have to do with the variety carried by PV (where we bought ours)? More feedback and info would be great, thanks. (And yes, we’ll plant the seeds and see what happens next year!)
