Q: Blueberry Bushes – How to Stimulate Growth?

A PVFS Customer Blog Entry – Moved here for visibility.

I order a blueberry bush and planted it as instructed in March .While the bush is alive and has grown leaves, I haven’t noticed any growth in height. Do they require alot of sunlight or water or how dcan I stimulate growth?

Newly planted blueberries do best when the flowers are removed for the first two years. This encourages strong vigorous vegetative growth, which is essential for a healthy plant in the future. Production of flowers and fruit deter growth when plants are young, small or weak.

Blueberries have a shallow, fibrous root system, so mulch, mulch, mulch! They need a consistent source of water to keep the root zone moist and they need good drainage. Keep the area around the plants well weeded to avoid competition for nutrients. They will make the best fruit in full sun, they will do OK in part shade but will have less flowers and therefore less fruit.

New plants need fertile soil, so feed with a fertilizer such as our Acid Mix which is specially formulated for plants that require a lower pH soil.

    Thanks for growing organic!

Also, try using liquid kelp which has natural rooting hormones in case the bush hasn’t had good root growth or was shocked during transplanting.
